Short biography of Maria Marinelli

Maria Marinelli (Spoleto, 1992) is a visual artist and graphic designer. She holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Arti Visive e Discipline dello Spettacolo (Visual Arts and Performing Arts), with a specialization in Painting, from Accademia di Belle Arti of Perugia. During her studies she developed a strong interest in printmaking, which led her to spend a year at Accademia di Belle Arti of Urbino, focusing on Publishing and Illustration for Artistic Printmaking, where she deepened her knowledge of traditional printmaking techniques and artist’s books, before returning to Perugia to complete her Master’s degree. She collaborated for two years as an assistant in the Printmaking and Special Graphic Techniques courses at the Academy of Perugia, alongside artist and professor Wilma Lok, an experience that consolidated her personal research between monotype, printmaking, and collage. In parallel, she trained in graphic design, a field that today enriches her artistic practice. Since 2018 she has been a member of the collective BecomingX – Art+Sound, exploring live drawing and digital art in performative contexts. Her current work focuses on the intersection between contemporary printmaking and digital creation, seeking a hybrid visual language capable of uniting tradition and innovation.

Brief description of her personal project

Maria, of Italian origin and with much of her life spent in Peru, transforms her multicultural experience into a profound and sensitive visual inquiry. Her artistic path spans diverse expressive media – printmaking, monotype, collage, artist’s books, and digital illustration – as part of an ongoing experimentation. Her practice arises from the urgency to give form to thoughts and images generated by the constant dialogue between the inner self and the external world. The conflict with cultural identity has nurtured in her a sense of non-belonging that drives her to construct personal worlds and to reflect on the idea of home, distance, and roots. Currently, her research focuses on the intersection of printmaking and digital creation. After refining both techniques independently, she now seeks a process guided by the integration and interconnection of the traditional and the digital, with the aim of developing a personal language that delves into both the technical and the expressive, fostering a balance between the memory of the craft and contemporary innovation.
