“A Miró in Central Park: The Unrealized Dream of a Monumental Sculpture in New York”

Posted on 10 November 2025

Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca presents "A Miró in Central Park", an exhibition that delves into one of Joan Miró’s most ambitious — and least known — projects: a monumental sculpture conceived for New York’s Central Park between 1972 and 1975, which was ultimately never built.

This unique exhibition reconstructs the story of the project through models, preparatory drawings, correspondence, and previously unseen materials, and places it within the wider context of Miró’s rich and longstanding relationship with the United States — a key focus of the major exhibition Miró and the United States, opening on October 10, 2025 at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.

Together, both exhibitions invite a fresh look at Miró’s legacy, highlighting the crucial role that the United States played in his artistic evolution and international reach. The Central Park project is a striking example of this connection: an opportunity to integrate a Miró sculpture into the heart of New York City, in what could have become the first modern sculpture permanently placed in the city’s most iconic public space.

Driven by Margit Rowell (then curator at the Guggenheim Museum and member of the New York City Cultural Council), the proposed sculpture was intended for children and reflected the playfulness and poetic energy that define Miró’s work. Although it was never realized due to disagreements over scale, materials, and funding, the creative process behind it — and the vision it embodied — can now be explored in depth.

Among the highlights of the show, presented at the Fundació’s Pilar Juncosa Library, are a polychrome model reminiscent of traditional Mallorcan siurells, a unique sketch labeled “Central Park”, photomontages, and archival materials that offer a glimpse into Miró’s dream of bringing monumental art into the public sphere of New York.

A Miró in Central Park complements and deepens the narrative of Miró and the United States — on view at Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona from October 10, 2025 to February 22, 2026 — a landmark exhibition that explores how Miró and American artists mutually influenced and reshaped the trajectory of 20th-century art. By shifting the focus beyond Paris, these parallel exhibitions place the United States at the center of a revised understanding of Miró’s artistic journey.
